5 minute read
This is a list of the Vietnamese content I've learned from. My focus is on southern Vietnamese. All of this content features southern speakers.
beginner content
- Lilian Vietnamese - comprehensible input
- Peppa Pig - brainrotting kid's cartoon
low-budget romdroms
- BigCat Drama - insanely fast-paced soaps
- THVL1 - insanely slow-paced soaps
subtitled shows
Most Netflix Vietnamese dubs don't have matching subtitles. But some do. In these cases there's usually two tracks: a northern sub track that doesn't match, and a hidden southern one that does. To get the southern track you can use subadub and select the second option in its drop-down, or you can
- Turn off subs.
- Set the audio to Vietnamese.
- Refresh.
- Re-enable Vietnamese subs.
The following shows have matching subtitles and are available in Canada:
- Alice in Borderland
- Squid Game (season 2 only)
- Extraordinary Attorney Woo
- Our Beloved Summer
- Hierarchy
- Business Proposal
- 3 Body Problem
- Glass Onion

manga and anime
You can buy manga from most book stores in Vietnam. From the Americas you can order from Viet Bookstore (mostly manga) or VietCan Books (more of a grab bag).
Many of these animes will require a VPN to locate you in Vietnam in order to access them. For Netflix, I use a VPN to locate me in Canada.

- Voz - central Vietnamese forum
- Voz Subreddit - group therapy
novels
These really become useful at intermediate level. The best form is an audiobook + ebook with hover dictionary to follow along to. That way you don't have to subvocalize and can get labeled sound system input too. I demo that method here.
The next best method is consulting an English version of the text and rereading passages you don't understand after getting the hints.
Short of that, there's dictbox.
